VENUE

Broneirion
Llandinam, Powys, SY17 5DE

Our base for the weekend will be Broneirion, the home of Girlguiding in Wales. Broneirion is an idyllic venue conveniently located near to the A470 between Newtown and Llanidloes in the heart of Mid Wales close to major rail links.

Set in 4 acres of well-maintained grounds with stunning views over the Severn Valley, Broneirion was originally built by Wales's leading Victorian industrialist, David Davies, in 1864. Girlguiding Cymru moved into Broneirion in 1947 and have used it as their headquarters ever since.

The venue offers a choice of on-site camping or shared indoor guest rooms inside the beautiful country house, alongside a large marquee and a range of meeting rooms for all our sessions and indoor events.

On the water sessions will take place in nearby Newtown on the River Severn.

  • Understand how disabled people may view themselves in society and those factors that may prevent them from fully participating in paddlesport.
  • Establish basic communications skills with disabled people.
  • Apply existing coaching skills to meet the needs of disabled participants.
  • Select equipment and make minor modifications to it, so as to make paddlesport more inclusive.
  • Describe the Health and Safety issues when working with disabled people.
  • Use appropriate terminology.
  • List the range of impairments that may be encountered.
  • Describe how the Equality Act (2010) affects paddlesport organisations.
* This workshop provides 18 months of CPD. *
A3 - Time to Listen - Club Safeguarding Officer Training
This course will support you in your role as a Club Safeguarding Officer and help to further develop your understanding of child protection and safeguarding within a paddlesport environment. You will learn about the policies and procedures in place, and the different roles and responsibilities of everyone contributing towards the safeguarding of children. You will be guided through a variety of exercises and activities in order to develop the skills necessary to implement best practice in your club.

Please note: You must have already have completed a Safeguarding and Protecting Children (SPC) workshop before attending this course.
A4 - Young Volunteers Training Day
This is a special free training day for participants in our new Young Volunteers programme. If you're interested in taking part, you can find more information on our Young Volunteers page.
Session A Outdoor Workshops (Saturday 10am - 3pm)

Please note, if you select an Outdoor Workshop for the morning, you will not be able to take part in any of the indoor Session B workshops. You will have lunch on site at your paddling location and will make your way back to Broneirion at 3pm to ensure you are back in time for the AGM and evening events.

A8 - Guided River Trip on the River Severn
Leaders from Welshpool Canoe Club will take you on a guided river trip on the lovely Grade 1/2 River Severn, highlighting where the new access points will be in Newtown.

You will need to bring your own boat and personal paddling equipment for this workshop. Any participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
A9 - Try something new (for U16s)

Want to try something new? Under 16s are invited to spend the day trying out three different competition disciplines - sprint, polo and freestyle - with expert coaches and plenty of equipment on hand so you can try a range of different boats and learn something new. We'll split the day up into short sessions where you'll get a good understanding of what each discipline is like and how to enjoy and succeed in it if you want to do more - and how you can get further training if you decide that sprint, polo or freestyle are the discipline for you!
Session B Indoor Events (Saturday 2pm - 4pm)

On Saturday afternoon, you'll be able to attend your choice of two workshops from the list below. Please note, if you select an Outdoor Workshop for the morning (Session A), you will not be able to take part in Session B.

B1 - Fundraising and Communications for your club
Are you looking to grow your club but struggling with fundraising or communications? This session will take you through a range of sources of funding for clubs, including grants, fundraising events, fee structures, and more - with advice and tips about how to maximise your chance of success. We'll also introduce you to some great tools and ideas for marketing your club - as one of the best ways to secure your club's future is a strong membership base.
B2 - Clear Access Clear Waters - An introduction to our new Access Campaign
We'll give you a sneak preview of the Clear Access Clear Waters campaign in Wales and the role that paddlers can play in raising the profile of access challenges and in protecting the environment.
B3 - My Pathway - Qualifications and Awards
There's a pathway for every paddler - and in this session, we'll give you a 'How to' guide to get where you want to be, with an overview of the new Personal Performance Awards as well as the coaching, leadership and safety qualifications.
B4 - Women and girls in paddlesport - how to increase participation
Paddlesport currently has a big gender gap - only 28% of Canoe Wales members are female. But most clubs and centres are keen to get women and girls on the water, and this session will share what works to encourage more female participants. It will cover some of the latest research on what motivates women and girls to participate in sport and support attendees to develop opportunities to use role models and influencers to better engage women and girls.
Session C Outdoor Workshops (Sunday 10am - 3pm)

C1 - Guided River Trip on the River Severn
Leaders from Canoe Wales and Welshpool Canoe Club will take you on a guided river trip on the lovely Grade 1/2 River Severn, highlighting where the new access points will be in Newtown.

Please note: You will need to bring your own boat and personal paddling equipment for this workshop. Any participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
C3 - Working towards your Discover Award
This sessions is for paddlers who want to start working towards their Personal Paddling Awards. We'll get you started on your journey toward your Discover Award with coaching on your personal paddling skills - and if you haven't already earned it, you'll finish the day with your Start Award too.

This session is for both kids and adults - minimum age of 5 years old, and any participants under 10 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. You can participate in any craft.
A10/C4 - How to deliver the Start and Discover Awards
This session is designed for coaches and leaders to assist you in your understanding of the Start and Discover awards so you feel confident supporting new paddlers through the awards - and completing their assessment. If you are unsure of the changes, new to assessing or would like to improve your understanding of these awards, we'll take you through ideas for how to structure your training sessions and how to use the awards as a framework for developing your participants' skills. You can participate in any craft.

This is a closed FSRT course for participants in our new Young Volunteers programme. If you're interested in taking part, you can find more information on our Young Volunteers page.
