Help make a difference to paddlesport in Wales

If you're looking to make a difference to our community this year, we have some great new volunteer opportunities for you!

We know it can be hard to find time to give back to our community, but if you've ever thought about trying to make a difference in Welsh paddlesport, please do read on and think about applying for one (or more!) of the opportunities below. Our sport is only as strong as our volunteers - and you really can make a big impact if you're able to give some of your time.

--Honorary President

The Board of Directors are currently seeking nominations for the new voluntary position of Honorary President of Canoe Wales. The President will be appointed to a two-year team and will serve in an ambassadorial role as the public face of Canoe Wales to our members, partner organisations and the public, with responsibility for ensuring that the diverse viewpoints of our members are represented to the Directors.

--Equality Steering Group Member

We want paddlesport to be for everyone - but unfortunately, we know that there are barriers to participation which can make it harder for some people to get on the water. As part of our approach to tackling these problems, Canoe Wales has formed a new Equality Steering Group which will meet 2-3 times a year to advise the Board of Directors and Staff on the Canoe Wales Equality Action Plan, make recommendations to improve opportunities for underrepresented groups in paddlesport, and monitor implementation of the Canoe Wales Equality Policy.

We are currently seeking new members to join the Steering Group - and we would ideally like to see representatives of a wide range of underrepresented groups, including women, disabled people, LGBT people, people from BME communities, native Welsh speakers and people from low-income communities. While some related project or paddlesport experience is desirable, we would like to encourage applications from anyone with a passion for equality in sport and a unique perspective on the barriers people might face.

--Safeguarding Case Management Group Member

Canoe Wales is looking to extend the current range of expertise on our Safeguarding Case Management Group (CMG) by appointing up to three new members to the group. The CMG’s role is to provide advice and guidance in relation to safeguarding concerns, cases and adverse DBS disclosures. Members of the CMG are required to consider all the available evidence and make fair, considered, proportionate, and defensible decisions with regard to the management of a safeguarding concern.

The appointment of new members will seek to ensure that appropriate knowledge, experience and perspectives from a wide range of sectors informs and strengthens the group’s discussions and decision-making process.

We are currently seeking new members who can provide expertise from the following sectors: youth/social work, law, education or coaching/sport management. The ideal candidate should have a passion for the safety and wellbeing of children, young people and adults at risk; understanding and knowledge of the sport or voluntary sector; and experience in responding to and managing safeguarding concerns. Candidates do not need specialist knowledge of paddlesport although applicants with considerable experience within the sport will also be welcomed as a “sport specific” member of the group.

On Tuesday evening, Canoe Wales welcomed over 80 people to it’s online AGM and Annual Meeting. The evening started with an introduction from the Canoe Wales Chair, Kerry Chown who then introduced Tavi Murray and Russell Scaplehorn who began the evening with a talk on their incredible sea kayaking trip around Wales. Tavi and Russell took us on a journey around the coastline, into the canals and estuaries, and through storms and other challenges. They inspired us all to do something similar with tales of connection and achievement and it was a great start to the evening. The normal business of the AGM came next, and viewers received an update on the Canoe Wales Board. They also received an overview of the five nominees for the two vacant elected positions and we moved into the voting. It was clear the voting was a key focus of the evening and significantly contributed to the bumper turnout. Many proxy votes had been received demonstrating the interest and engagement and also the high calibre of the five candidates. As a consequence of the voting, Megan Hamer-Evans and Jim Potter were selected as the two candidates and will be inducted on to the Canoe Wales Board of Directors in the coming weeks. Kerry Chown then gave her Chair’s report where she announced she would be standing down as Chair next June. Alistair Dickson, CEO, followed with an update of the activities of the association across the various functional areas. Andy Booth, Canoe Wales Finance Director, then followed and gave a detailed picture of the financial situation of both Canoe Wales and Canoe Wales Sales and Services. Votes were taken where the accounts were approved as presented and Bevan Buckland LLC were reappointed for 2024-25. Kerry then introduced the Board’s proposal to change the trading name of Canoe Wales to Paddle Cymru. This was approved with 80% of voters in approval of the change. Canoe Wales will be changing its trading name to Paddle Cymru, heralding a new era for us as the national governing body for paddlesport in Wales. The new name and brand identity were approved by the Canoe Wales membership following it’s AGM on Tuesday evening. This is following an extensive process of consultation with its paddling community, partners and stakeholders over the past two years. It’s also following the proposal of the International Canoe Federation to become Paddle Worldwide which was agreed at the annual congress last week. Following the vote, Canoe Wales will be updating the branding and launching a new website in weeks to come. Please watch this space!
