Since Friday 19 February's lockdown review by Welsh Government, Canoe Wales has been working hard to interpret what this means for paddlesport in Wales.
We are very aware of how frustrated many of you are feeling with the restrictions placed upon us and the impact this has had on our sport as we navigate through the pandemic. Paddle sports are a fantastic and well-evidenced way to improve mental wellbeing – something we’re all in need of during this current time - and we know how much many of you want to get back out on the water.
While the First Minister made it clear that we will remain in Alert Level 4 for another 3 weeks, Welsh Government has relaxed several restrictions related to exercise, including:
While there is no specific legislation on what sort of exercise is currently permitted, the Alert Level 4 FAQs that advise against activities that “involve a significant degree of risk (for example swimming or other exercises at sea, in lakes, rivers or other waterways)” remain in place in the Welsh Government guidance.
On Monday 22 February, Canoe Wales met with the Welsh Sports Association to generate further clarity. Sadly, no further adjustments to the exercise regulations have been permitted based on our recommendations, and our advice (based on Welsh Government guidance) remains to stay off the water.
We remain completely committed to getting everyone safely back on the water as soon as possible. We will continue to firmly push for clarity here and trust you will bear with us while we lobby on your behalf.
